I always thought they were pretty cool!
Saw them on tour a couple of times and definately a good live band (and yes they did et Tigertailz for breakfast! haha)
Like Stacey kinda said, they are a bit of a "one-trick-pony" but they do it well!
Big difference sound-wise between the record and live too. Was amazed that it was actually a guy singing on the record!
So I have held off on them for all these years now. Just something about them never floated my boat. Maybe it was the wacky rabid fan following that is out there for them. That type of shit always turns me off. Odd I am a fan of Marillion then, but I found them before I found out about the wacky fanbase that scares the shit out of me.
But I digress.
So last night I decided to start checking 'em out. Yeah, pretty friggin' cool stuff, but a bit odd also. On first listen I was blown away. On second listen, I wasn't too sure of they were the same songs all of a sudden! LOL!!! Still cool songs, but on second spin they weren't holding the "OH WOW!!!" factor for me anymore.
I should have the full "Planet Fame" by the time I get home...ahem...so I will check it out on better surroundings then. But it was weird how different it seemed just after two spins, so if they are "hit or miss" live, I can fully understand how some would love 'em or hate 'em.

I didn't get to see them live over here so can't really comment on the live aspect, although i do have a couple of Live cassettez here by them with good quality. I thought they sounded pretty fucking tight live, a little heavier than the CD though, but good nonetheless.
I've heard (read) that at some shows, he sounds like a totally different vocalist, I think. Never seen 'em live, so I can't comment. But those that do dislike Robin, seem to dislike them on account of live shows.
To be honest, he soundz the same to me live az the CD.
Yeah, I also got a few live tracks last night, and he sounds the same. It sounds like the drummer only has a snare, but the voice is the same still.
Definitely heavier live. Can't fault them for the energy and effort they put into the live show, but last year they were virtual residents over here. Played too much, so by their third trip of the year, in December (the Tigertailz stint), catching one show was enuff.
I guess the idea was to get as much exposure as possible, but it was the same fans turning up at every show. The only thing that changed was the bassist and drummer, lol.
Whatever.....
Believe me when I say it... watch this space on the new Robin Black CD, true, it may be a touch more mainstream, but it's gonna knock the socks off Planet: Fame
and... IMO, RB & the IRS 'are' a 'Live' band, much much much better 'Live'
